Every digital initiative comes with a plan. Execution, however, often comes with surprises.

Organizations know their internal constraints (time, budget, capacity) and plan for them, choosing partners to fill gaps in strategy, delivery or scale. What they can’t anticipate is how these solutions designed to serve many, rather than tailored to one, will work in practice. Some add unnecessary scope, duplicate capabilities or stretch budgets and timelines. Others leave gaps internal teams must bridge. Only once the work is underway does this secondary friction surface. Eventually, the solution’s original price can turn out to be a fraction of its true cost.

The risk is that solving execution friction can displace the initiative itself. There is, however, a model fitted to the work, one that can take on this friction so leadership stays on the outcomes that matter.

Eight enterprises across five points of execution friction show what that looks like.

execution friction #1: hiring bottlenecks vs. non-negotiable market windows.

Hiring cycles often run a quarter or longer, but product deadlines and market windows don’t wait. When teams turn to high-volume sourcing to move faster, what they usually get is resume volume, not verified competence. Senior engineers then spend dozens of hours per hire screening candidates and policing test integrity instead of building systems. Closing that gap takes a hiring model built around your deadline and tech stack, one that takes screening off your engineers’ plates so launch dates hold.

Stretched internal recruiting vs. unfamiliar regional talent markets. Critical technical roles in LatAm and Poland sat open for 13 weeks on average, stalling a global apparel leader’s digital transformation. We leveraged our AI-powered platform Torc’s talent capabilities and the Randstad Digital Talent Community (including RD Poland) and Coderbyte assessments, cutting time-to-fill to six weeks (54% faster), with 31 placements in nine months, 60% salary savings, and zero turnover.

Manager screening fatigue vs. remote assessment fraud. Engineering managers at an investment firm lost hours to repeat validation screens because coding tests without proctor supervision couldn’t reliably catch AI-generated answers or proxy test-takers. A multi-layered candidate evaluation process, including proctored Ropes assessments and live dual-camera SME interviews created a zero-tolerance integrity framework and supported ~100% growth in verified engineering talent across divisions.

Resume deluge vs. rigid integrator contracts. Hiring managers at an investment management firm were buried in unvetted vendor resumes, while systems integrators offered only long fixed commitments. Talent as a Service (TaaS) delivered curated top-three candidates with evidence packages containing validated code, recorded SME interviews, and scorecards. The engagement grew from 40-60 roles to about 150, with 100+ consultants placed and manager review down to 20-30 minutes.

execution friction #2: scope creep & sunk costs vs. delivery momentum.

When a funded, staffed initiative stalls, the instinct is to fix everything at once. The backlog balloons, priorities compete and nothing reaches production. Meanwhile, legacy systems still have to keep running, and vendors pull in different directions. Momentum returns when the team cuts scope to the few priorities that matter most, stabilizes what’s already in place, and gets work into production again, even if a previous vendor left the project off track.

Sprawling technical debt vs. an underdelivering integrator. A global food manufacturer’s SAP ECC program stalled after nearly $5M invested with an integrator and a year of delays. We cut the backlog from 21 improvements to five core business priorities and stabilized the SAP HANA, PaPM, and SAC work, moving it from red/orange to green in six months more cost efficiently than traditional systems integrators. Moreover, we established forward-looking management practices, provided comprehensive knowledge transfer and transitioned the project into a steady-state operations model.

execution friction #3: digital initiatives vs. operational reality.

Digital platforms and cloud systems scale smoothly on screen, but any initiative that touches warehouse floors or field labor eventually collides with real-world logistics. When volume spikes, software teams find themselves managing facility shifts, hardware upkeep, and attendance volatility, which are burdens they were never staffed to run. Execution stays on course when operational ownership, governance and real-time visibility are built into the delivery model.

Proprietary software strength vs. unmanaged ground operations. A last-mile delivery leader had strong routing software but no playbook for running 22 US sites. Randstad Digital’s managed model with three-tier governance, in-house training, and Data 360 real-time tracking supported order growth from 54K to 150K+, 33% faster pick/pack, and fulfillment success up from 89% to 93.9%. We continue to operate as a managed services partner for our client across 22 US sites, with presence in Australia and Europe and more than 200 staff under management.

execution friction #4: specialized expertise today vs. sustainable capability tomorrow.

Emerging capabilities like predictive AI and legacy modernization call for outside expertise on day one. But too often the enterprise ends up with a working system and no way to run it: partners leave behind complex platforms, internal teams are untrained and wary of touching production, and the capability stays a one-off project. Owning it tomorrow means building the handoff into the plan from the start.

Immediate AI skill gaps vs. contractor knowledge drain. A luxury aircraft manufacturer’s Salesforce transformation focused on AI-driven lead scoring, sales outreach prioritization and real-time data insights was slowed by talent shortages, manual and inefficient processes and disconnected data. Our hybrid talent pod paired short-term specialists with long-term hires on a path to full-time roles so the client gained in-house experts with deep system knowledge and experience, laying the foundation for an in-house Center of Excellence and projected lead prioritization up to 25% faster.

execution friction #5: activity tracking vs. measurable business outcomes.

In an enterprise portfolio, digital programs often look healthy on paper while failing to move business performance. Dashboards show green because milestones are met and tickets are closed, yet the system struggles in user acceptance testing and leadership can’t tell whether retention, time-to-market or margin is improving. Unclear intake and weak shared standards across vendors and business units add handoff friction and gaps no one owns. Outcomes follow when governance measures results from the get-go.

Milestone activity vs. proven business value. A Fortune 10 healthcare leader’s enterprise PMO tracked tasks and hours, leaving leadership unable to see whether programs moved patient engagement or compliance. Randstad Digital transformed the EPMO into a product- and services-aligned operating model, delivering 30%-40% faster time to productivity through standardized, role-based enablement, 20%-30% improvement in delivery efficiency through AI-enabled workflows and scaling delivery to 50+ resources with consistent governance and execution quality.

fit the model to the constraint, not vice versa.

No two initiatives hit the same constraint, yet most are handed the same delivery model. That mismatch is where the real cost sits: the rigid contract that outlasts the problem, the contractor whose knowledge leaves with them, the dashboard that stays green while the business doesn’t move.

These eight enterprises faced different constraints and needed different answers: a hiring sprint, ground-level discipline, a pared-down backlog, a planned handoff, a governance reset. What they shared was a partner that started from the constraint, not the catalog.
