about the clipper stad amsterdam.
Sailing ships have been critical to international commerce for thousands of years, and when it came to speed and efficiency, the clipper ships of the 19th century represented the pinnacle of commercial sailing technology. But as steam engines became more common, the majestic clippers soon gave way to more technologically advanced vessels. It’s been nearly a century since the tall masts of clipper ships dominated America's harbors — but they haven’t vanished forever. The Clipper Stad Amsterdam offers an unprecedented look into the beauty and craftsmanship of the vessels that once ruled the waves of commerce.
a piece of modern history.
The Stad Amsterdam is a marvelous example of what happens when the public and private sectors come together to pursue a common goal. In 1997, the city of Amsterdam, along with Randstad founder Frits Goldschmeding, agreed to jointly build and fund a sailing ship reminiscent of the great ships of the 19th century. Randstad then selected and trained a diverse group of workers who not only built an incredible ship, but who also learned a marketable trade in the process.
